I’ve heard it said countless times behind the chair, “I’d rather find a new Gyno than a new hairstylist” . Often times I’ve wondered how we, as an industry, could ease this tension.
I believe we can help you navigate this stressful and awkward encounter with ease and grace! Here are some tips I give my guests who are moving away to a place where I have no referrals and will be starting from scratch!
1. Be honest with yourself: what kind of client are you? A few questions to ask yourself:
i. Do I frequently leave unhappy?
ii. Do I feel like I cannot adequately express my concerns and desires?
iii. Am I always nervous when I go to the salon? If you answered yes to two or more of these questions you will most likely need a more ‘seasoned’ stylist. Yes, you will need to pay a bit more, but it will be worth it.
2. Schedule a Consultation – these services should be complimentary or if you’re charged, the cost should go towards your future service.
3. In this appointment, you should leave feeling heard and that you understand the plan to get you to where you want to go.
In the consultation, the stylist should ask you, “ How often do you visit the salon? What do you like about your hair, what don’t you like about your hair, tell me about your hair” and a conversation about your hair history.
4. If you’re not sold but still curious, schedule a blow-out.
If you like your experience with a blow-out service, you’ll likely enjoy a haircut/color experience. If you don’t enjoy your experience, don’t feel bad about continuing your search.
5. Beware of a stylist who doesn’t recommend home-care (product).
A stylist who cares about your hair, cares to have the conversation about how you are caring for your hair at home. What we do behind the chair and what you do at home are not mutually exclusive. It should not feel pushy but educational.
6. The conversation should mostly about your hair, a little about your personal information, and very little about the stylist.
If any ratio is off, RUN.
This quick list should help you narrow down you’re your search and alleviate the pain of finding a new stylist.
